A disaster is a serious disruption occurring over a short or long period of time that causes widespread human, material, economic or environmental loss which exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources. They may even alter the course of history by broadly affecting entire populations and exposing mismanagement or corruption regardless of how tightly information is controlled in a society. Disasters are routinely divided into natural or human-made, [8] although complex disasters, where there is no single root cause, are more common in developing countries. A specific disaster may spawn a secondary disaster that increases the impact. A classic example is an earthquake that causes a tsunami , resulting in coastal flooding. Some manufactured disasters have been ascribed to nature.

The Tragic Effects of Man Made Disasters

This paper aims to provide graduate students, researchers, and government and independent agencies with an overview of disaster types. Disaster types have been the subject of research by and concern to academicians and to government and independent agencies. The paper summarizes the views of researchers and agencies. Disaster types are collected from several sources such as technical, general articles, internet web sites, and internal reports. Disaster definitions, criteria and types are reviewed. The paper presents a comparison between the main types of disasters.

The Tragic Effects of Man Made Disasters

Earthquakes, floods and landslides, etc. In recent years these hazards took toll of thousands of lives and caused massive destruction of property. These have adversely affected the vital sectors of our development as agriculture, communication, irrigation, power projects and rural and urban settlements. The time and cost overrun in some cases have been enormous but their indirect impact on our economy has never been calculated. The unique geo-climatic conditions have exposed this country to natural catastrophes. Disasters can be defined as a sudden, accidental event of great magnitude that causes considerable damage to life and property. They are sudden, drastic and normally occur without any alarm or warning.

Swiss Reinsurance Company. This study reports on the worldwide economic losses from over natural catastrophes and man-made disasters recorded in and the cost to the global insurance industry. It specifically analyses the catastrophes cost to society, the insured losses and the gap between insured and non-insured economic losses, which points to a widespread lack of insurance. A special chapter on flooding in this edition of sigma reveals that flood loss potential can be just as high as that of earthquakes and storms. Analysing the floods in Thailand and their impact on the global manufacturing supply chain, the report points at the combination of factors — large affected areas, high concentration of property values, high insurance penetration, and insufficient pre-disaster risk preparedness — that multiplied the loss. It calls for businesses, governments, and societies at large to increasingly consider more stringent natural catastrophe and man-made disaster risk prevention and mitigation measures, especially in emerging countries of growing significance to the interconnected global economy; and for the insurance industry to further examine the implications of global supply-chains for a more holistic risk assessment going forward.

Richard Sexton This day course addresses fire and rescue department operations at natural and man-made disasters that may require interagency or interjurisdictional coordination. Earthquakes, hurricanes, blizzards, civil disturbances, terrorism, hazardous materials releases, tornadoes and floods are some of the topics covered. Emphasis is placed on command and control decision-making skills and the interrelationship of the operational function to hazard preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery.

Conflict and Catastrophe Medicine pp Cite as. Natural disasters are a growing public health problem in the increasing number of events and the numbers of people affected. This chapter focuses on some of the background health issues behind this global trend as they apply to aid workers. Technological disasters differ in many important respects from natural disasters in their causes and health impacts, and their frequency is much lower as they are inherently preventable by engineers and government regulation. Avoiding technological disasters is more straightforward than mitigating natural hazards, but disaster workers should include both types of disaster in an all-hazards approach to planning and preparedness. Thus an earthquake may trigger the failure of a hazardous installation such as a nuclear reactor, or floodwaters may become contaminated with toxic materials.
