In this, the first major book on the subject in fifty years, Stephen Jay Gould documents the history of the idea of recapitulation from its first appearance among the pre-Socratics to its fall in the early twentieth century.

This is especially true of the prodigious output and unique career of Stephen Jay Gould. Thus, it is perhaps predictable that his output—hundreds of papers and articles, many widely read and cited books—would be reviewed so unevenly in this new book. The strength of so many of the concepts and ideas proposed by Gould and his colleagues is that they have been tested so extensively, and often corroborated or fine-tuned. It seems appropriate to review them periodically to see how well they are holding up.

Ontogeny and Phylogeny

Ontogeny and Phylogeny is a book on evolution by Stephen Jay Gould , in which the author explores the relationship between embryonic development ontogeny and biological evolution phylogeny. Unlike his many popular books of essays, it was a technical book, and over the following decades it was influential in stimulating research into heterochrony , changes in the timing of embryonic development, which had been neglected since Ernst Haeckel 's theory that ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny had been largely discredited. Ontogeny and Phylogeny is Stephen Jay Gould 's first technical book. He wrote that Ernst Mayr had suggested in passing that he write a book on development. Gould stated he "only began it as a practice run to learn the style of lengthy exposition before embarking on my magnum opus about macroevolution. The first half of the book explores Ernst Haeckel 's biogenetic law recapitulation —the largely discredited idea that embryonic developmental stages replay the evolutionary transitions of adult forms of an organism's past descendants—and how this idea influenced thinking in biology , theology , and psychology. The second half of the book details how modern concepts such as heterochrony changes in developmental timing and neoteny the retardation of developmental expression or growth rates influence macroevolution major evolutionary transitions.

Ontogeny and phylogeny

Stephen Jay Gould, the evolutionary theorist at Harvard University whose research, lectures and prolific output of essays helped to reinvigorate the field of paleontology, died yesterday at his home in Manhattan. He was One of the most influential evolutionary biologists of the 20th century and perhaps the best known since Charles Darwin, Dr. Gould touched off numerous debates, forcing scientists to rethink sometimes entrenched ideas about evolutionary patterns and processes. One of his best known theories, developed with Niles Eldredge, argued that evolutionary change in the fossil record came in fits and starts rather than a steady process of slow change.

Skip navigation. Ontogeny and Phylogeny is a book published in , in which the author Stephen J. Gould, who worked in the US, tells a history of the theory of recapitulation. A theory of recapitulation aims to explain the relationship between the embryonic development of an organism ontogeny and the evolution of that organism's species phylogeny. Although there are several variations of recapitulationist theories, most claim that during embryonic development an organism repeats the adult stages of organisms from those species in it's evolutionary history. Gould suggests that, although fewer biologists invoked recapitulation theories in the twentieth century compared to those in the nineteenth and eighteenth centuries, some aspects of the theory of recapitulation remained important for understanding evolution.

'Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny' was Haeckel's answer to 19th-century biology's most vexing question: what is the relationship between.
