Social science , any branch of academic study or science that deals with human behaviour in its social and cultural aspects. Usually included within the social sciences are cultural or social anthropology , sociology , psychology , political science , and economics. The discipline of historiography is regarded by many as a social science, and certain areas of historical study are almost indistinguishable from work done in the social sciences. Most historians, however, consider history as one of the humanities. In the past, Sovietology was always considered a social science discipline, in contrast to Russian Studies. Beginning in the s, the term behavioral sciences was often applied to the disciplines designated as the social sciences. Those who favoured this term did so in part because these disciplines were thus brought closer to some of the sciences, such as physical anthropology and physiological psychology , which also deal with human behaviour.

The Relationship of Sociology with Other Social Sciences

History was long regarded as the principal school subject in the field of human relationships. Increased attention to geography, the gradual separation of civics from history, and the introduction of sociology and economics into school programs made it necessary to think in terms of a group of social studies instead of the single subject of history. The rise of the field of the social studies has caused some uneasiness as to its significance and as to its effects upon the study of history. This discussion is designed to clarify the term and restate the relationship of history to the other social studies. The Committee accepts the obligation and responsibility of clarifying its meaning. These uses of the term are erroneous.

History is a study of the various facts of human life and is closely linked with other social sciences which make a specific study of different facts of human life. Many scholars held a view that history is the centre of the social sciences which feeds other social sciences. A historian is not merely concerned with the tracing of the history of the political process by a narration of the episodes. But he has to learn the nature of fundamental political principles and basic forms of political institution. In the view of this closeness between two subjects, the development of political institutions, rules, regulations, right and duties, law and mode of justice, executive, legislative and administrative functions, economic and financial implications, nature of bureaucracy, fundamental principles of state policy are all defined under the constitution history.

The Relationship of Sociology with Other Social Sciences

The authors report on the results of a survey of historians, which was part of a broader study of social and behavioral scientists undertaken by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Research Council, and the SSRC. Landes and Tilly discuss the obstacles to and the scholarly possibilities for historical research conducted in a social science framework, and make recommendations on how that collaboration would benefit the broader field of history, as well as social science disciplines. The report on history is concerned mainly with those persons—inside, but also outside, the historical profession—who are engaged in historical work of a social science character, and with that part of historical study and training that falls within the scope of social science. This focus has no invidious implications. Because history is not a unitary discipline, however, an inquiry of this kind assumes a special character. It cannot simply be addressed by the profession to the outside world. Instead it is addressed on behalf of one segment of the profession to both the discipline and the outside world.
