A system made of just a handful of particles acts just like larger systems, allowing scientists to study quantum behaviour more easily. Most substances physicists study are made up of huge numbers of particles -- so large that there is essentially no difference between the behavioural properties of a drop or a swimming pool's worth of pure water. Even a single drop can contain more than a quadrillion particles. Scientists have developed a photoelectrode that can harvest 85 percent of visible light in a 30 nanometers-thin semiconductor layer between gold layers, converting light energy 11 times more efficiently than previous methods. In the pursuit of realizing a sustainable society, there is an ever-increasing demand to develop revolutionary solar cells or artificial photosynthesis systems that utilize visible light energy from the sun while using as few materials as possible.

Materials technology is a relatively comprehensive discipline that begins with the production of goods from raw materials to processing of materials into the shapes and forms needed for specific applications. Materials - metals, plastics and ceramics - typically have completely different properties, which means that the technologies involved in their production are fundamentally different. Materials technology is a constantly evolving discipline, and new materials with interesting properties lead to new applications. For example, the combination of different materials into composites gives rise to entirely new material properties. Materials Science is closely related to materials technology. The metallurgical industry and the production and processing of materials are very important aspects of Norwegian industry, and also offer significant added value to the economy through the export of products such as aluminium and ferrosilicon. Materials are also of very great importance in the oil and gas industry, such as in providing protection against the corrosion of steel in the marine environment.
The Journal of Materials Science publishes papers that report significant original research results on, or techniques for studying, the relationships between structure, processing, properties, and performance of materials. Topics include metals, ceramics, glasses, polymers, electrical and electronic materials, composite materials, fibers, nanostructured materials, and materials for application in the life sciences. Papers are selected for their high quality and broad interest to the materials community. The Journal of Materials Science is now firmly established as the leading source of primary communication for scientists investigating the structure and properties of all engineering materials.
