Planting mangrove seedlings as a classroom project in Funafala, Tuvalu. The first report, focused on the physical science of climate change, was released in September The second part, Working Group II , which was released today, focuses on the impacts of climate change, adaptation measures, and vulnerability. The new report incorporates the latest research on impacts, risk, and adaptation, tying in climate change with socioeconomic development, drawing heavily on research conducted at IIASA. The research shows that risk, vulnerability, and economic development go hand in hand and must be addressed in an integrated way, and better defines the potential human impacts of climate change.

The aim of the workshops was to identify, compile and analyze relevant indigenous and local observations, knowledge and practices related to understanding climate change impacts, adaptation and mitigation. The workshops will provide a key opportunity to ensure that experience, sources of information and knowledge scientific, indigenous and local , along with data and literature scientific and grey , focusing on vulnerable and marginalized regions of the world are made available to the authors of the IPCC 5th Assessment Report and the global community. The Working Group I contribution considers past and future changes in the climate system, such as temperature of land and ocean, precipitation, ice and glaciers, sea level rise, atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gas, ocean acidification, and energy budget. It also evaluates climate models, response to the climate system, human influence to climate change, and committed climate change. The Working Group II contribution considers impacts in natural and human systems on all continents and across the oceans caused by changes in climate in recent decades. The report evaluates how patterns of risks and potential benefits are shifting due to climate change, and looks at how impacts and risks related to climate change can be reduced and managed through adaptation and mitigation. The Working Group III contribution assesses the scientific, technological, environmental, economic and social aspects of mitigation. It assesses trends in greenhouse gas emissions, mitigation policies and long-term mitigation pathways with various sectors, which comprise energy supply, transport, buildings, industry, agriculture land use , and human settlements. The Synthesis Report distils and integrates the findings of the three working group contributions to the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report -- the most comprehensive assessment of climate change yet undertaken, produced by hundreds of scientists -- as well as the two Special Reports produced during this cycle.

This definitive assessment is the result of years of intensive work by leading experts in the field. It provides the most comprehensive look to date at the widespread impacts and risks of climate change and the opportunities for response. The full version of the Working Group II report includes a Summary for Policymakers, a Technical Summary, 30 assessment chapters, cross-chapter boxes, frequently asked questions, and high-resolution graphics.
