The story is a black comedy in which drama critic Mortimer Brewster Randall discovers that his elderly aunts Abby and Martha Stickney and Natwick respectively have been poisoning their lonely male guests. Boris Karloff reprised his role as Jonathan Brewster who is described by the other characters as resembling the Frankenstein star , which he had originated on Broadway. He had been unable to appear in Frank Capra's film due to a scheduling conflict, but had played Jonathan on television once before, in a adaptation for the CBS anthology series The Best of Broadway. Karloff and director Schaefer had previously performed the play during World War II, touring Pacific islands such as Kwajalein to entertain troops for Special Services. On January 10, Broadway gave them exactly what they were looking for in the form of a hilarious new play by Joseph Kesselring, Arsenic and Old Lace. The play became an immediate critical and popular success, running for 1, performances. It also became a hit in England in as theatergoers who were suffering through post-blitz London lined up for tickets. In , Hollywood produced a film version staring Cary Grant that became a huge box office success. The play, a clever combination of the farcical and the macabre, centers on two elderly sisters who are famous in their Brooklyn neighborhood for their numerous acts of charity. Unfortunately, however, their charity includes poisoning lonely old men who come to their home looking for lodging.

The play is a farcical black comedy revolving around Mortimer Brewster and his slightly crazy family. He has two spinster aunts who have taken to murdering lonely old men by poisoning them, a brother who believes he is Theodore Roosevelt and digs locks for the Panama Canal in the cellar of the Brewster home which then serve as graves for the aunts' victims; he thinks that they died of yellow fever ; and a murderous brother who has received plastic surgery to conceal his identity, and now looks like horror-film actor Boris Karloff. Through the midst of all this, Mortimer thinks he is ready to marry the girl next door, but, should he bring her into this madness? Director - Andrew Miller.
