Buy DogeCoin!! Took Olaf by the hand, but a bunch of happy non-commissural officers, who knocked him on the head. Came through icy water hard times while serving in military and made him feel helpless, with the help of some other officers.

This poem was published in , shortly after the end of WWI. It is a powerful warning about the dangers of hyper-patriotic sentiment. Note this is a song - "i sing of", and thus is meant to be a sort of lament. In the traditions of such, Olaf represents a form of common suffering; that visited upon those who will not conform.

Note there is very little mention of his specific "objections to war" but instead a focus on the torment he undergoes because of his refusal to do two things The military is a methphor here, as it is not only soldiers that are required to do these two things, and the officers and firstclassprivates are simply symbolic for the wrath any society visits upon it members that will not approve and yeild. Olaf is both brave it is easier to simply go along and blonde he commits no actual crime.

Cummings compares Olaf's bravery to his own Cummings did not conform to traditional poetry standards, a sin that carries no real consequences and Olaf's innocence to the reader's The poem engenders two interpretations and Cummings only chooses one of them. The first interpretation centers on the fact that, if Olaf is truly against war, why is he in the military? Cummings says, that, "He is more brave than me. The other interpretation centers on Olaf's stubbornness.

This is not addressed by Cummings. Why can't Olaf serve his Country in silence and save his protest for when he leaves the military?? If he doesn't like war, why doesn't he just go AWOL?? People who don't like being told what to do, do not join the military. Cummings mentions Christ whose life is recorded in the Bible. Yet, the Bible is used to tell people what to do. Olaf does not like being told what to do or what to believe.

Thus, the second interpretation would see Olaf as just an irrationally stubborn young man. In short, if you want to die, this is exactly the kind of protest you should engage in. Posted on by a guest. This poem basically talkes about a soldier called Olaf who went into the military without actually wanting to. In the poem, cummings decribed the torture Olaf has to endured because he would not conform to " a conscientious object-or" The poet expresses the bravery in Olaf; in how he stood up for his belief and not what the military forces upon him.

E Cummings. The poem is about a man who is a strong pacifist and refuses to go to war to fight. A colonel takes him away and tries to convince him to go to war, but he refuses to comply. He is tortured yet still refuses to go to war. It is indicated that he is braver than those who did go to war to fight for their country, as not only did he endure physical pain, but he went through the emotional trauma of being referred to as a coward and being made to believe that he is letting his country down.

It first appeared in Cummings' collection ViVa. It depicts the life of Olaf, a conscientious objector and pacifist during the First World War who is tortured by the United States Army but nonetheless "will not kiss your fucking flag", and subsequently dies in prison. The poem is based on the true story of a "big blond conscientious objector who was reading Sir Thomas Browne ", [1] whom Cummings briefly encountered while stationed at Camp Devens in ; [2] Susan Cheever noted that Cummings never learned the man's name, and only "vividly imagined his fate". Critics have noted the similarity of the opening stanza to that of Virgil 's Aeneid , underlining the contrast between Olaf whose heroic values are based in peace and Achilles whose heroic values were based in war.

Edward E. Estlin Cummings was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and educated at Harvard. When he began publishing in the s, he lived in both New York and Paris, but he eventually spent most of his time in New York. From the outset there were powerfully contradictory impulses in his work. A strong component of sentimentality persisted throughout his career, but it is counterpointed either with blunt sexuality or with defamiliarizing typographic dislocation. He was sardonic about organized religion, but maintained an almost transcendentalizing faith in human beings. He championed individuals against the power of the state, as with "i sing of Olaf glad and big," and as a result was drawn to the radical Left early on, even translating Louis Aragon's poem "Red Front" from the French, but a visit to the Soviet Union turned him against communism.

I recently came across two quotations nearly back to back in a recent book I was skimming. The first was one I had typed and taped to my office door when I was a young Assistant Professor. Being true to oneself is the law of God. These two assertions, taken together, say much about the spirit of individualism that was instrumental in creating American civilization and is now becoming responsible for its decline leading to what might be its ultimate destruction. The comment by e. Both statements bespeak integrity but define it differently. For cummings, individualism was existentially rugged and admirably rebellious.

- Un punqui.
