Angular Correlations in Nuclear Disintegration pp Cite as. The theory for angular correlations involving conversion electrons is briefly discussed. The expressions for the analysis of conversion electron correlations are summarized. The experimental techniques are reviewed, with an emphasis on recent developments. Some results from electron correlation experiments are presented. Finally, a few references are given to applications in neighbouring fields such as perturbed angular correlations, aftereffects of hole formation, and conversion electrons following nuclear reactions. The main conclusion is that the theory of conversion electron correlations now appears to be well understood and in good agreement with the experiments.

This chapter concerns the basic reactions which occur when radiation encounters matter and the effects produced by these processes. For the experimental nuclear or particle physicist, knowledge of these interactions is of paramount importance. Indeed, as will be seen in the following chapters, these processes are the basis of all current particle detection devices and thus determine the sensitivity and efficiency of a detector. At the same time, these same reactions may also interfere with a measurement by disturbing the physical state of the radiation: for example, by causing energy information to be lost, or deflecting the particle from its original path, or absorbing the particle before it can be observed. A knowledge of these reactions and their magnitudes is thus necessary for experimental design and corrections to data.

A set of common factors, resulting from fundamental photon interactions with matter full energy peak, Compton continuum, backscattering peak and the residual factor , has been used. The scaling and loading coefficients for the common factors have been estimated by a confirmatory least squares technique of factor analysis. A latent interpolation of modelling coefficients enables to construct a response function in the response operator for an arbitrary energy of the measured spectrum. The analysis of incidental spectral parameters indicates a significant improvement of the whole spectrum processing. A comparison of the SCFA method with the most commonly used peak net area method shows that the former method is 5—10 times more sensitive depending on interferences. In gamma-gamma coincidence spectrometry, though, while the dead time takes into account only events that are actually digitized, the pile-up effects are proportional to the actual gamma-ray detection rate in each detector, not only to the ones that trigger the coincidence gate. Thus, the pile-up corrections may not be so easy to assess as in single spectrometry systems. A 3kBq 60 Co source was analyzed, both alone and in the presence of other radioactive sources Cs, Ba and Eu , and the resulting coincidence peak areas were compared to assess the effectiveness of two distinct corrections: a simple normalization by the live time of acquisition and the normalization by the count rate obtained using a pulse generator.
